While the point of your article makes sense - i.e., that you can't "force" inspiration - you've misidentified "brainstorming". Real brainstorming is a group-based method for ideating alternatives. Two key prerequisites for brainstorming are: that the majority of participants have a relatively deep understanding of the problem being brainstormed; and that the participants have the broadest possible range of professional and personal backgrounds.

The first prereq helps ensure the session stays on task. The second prereq facilitates the kind of synergy that often leads to inspired solutions.

For a person to brainstorm individually with little or no preparatory study of the specific goal simply isn't what brainstorming is.
