Hypothetical discussions, though useful for exploring possible research questions, tend to influence public thinking in unintended ways, leading to widespread acceptance of claims that cannot (yet) be justified.

In the absense of objective and robust data, the fallback position is IMHO best based on certain philosophical principles. The short version of all that, applied here, is basically "You do you, so long as you don't treat others as you yourself don't want to be treated".
