Great article! I agree with you whole-heartedly.

However, I suspect politicians are seeing the problems you point out as opportunities to create a propaganda arm of government, to serve their needs instead of the public's. Maybe I'm too much of a cynic, but I don't think they have the backbone to resist the idea of having a corporate "attack dog" to help shape public opinion.
